Ithaca, NY – The Downtown Ithaca Alliance is looking for artists and residents of all ages to submit ideas for creative bike rack designs from now through May 8th.
Each of 15 winning designs will receive a cash prize, including a special $200 prize for the top entry by a Tompkins County youth. The DIA will work with a bicycle rack company to fabricate racks based on the winning designs, and the City will install them at preselected locations downtown this summer. The goals of the project are to encourage cycling as a viable mode of transportation while enhancing the community with creative functional art in our urban environment, designed by and for the whole community.
Submissions are be accepted from any individual or group. Youth, students, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and elders are all strongly encouraged to apply. Individuals may submit up to five designs. A design review board composed of bicycle advocates, the City’s Public Art Commission and other community members will work with the Downtown Ithaca Alliance and be responsible for selecting the winning designs. Designs will be judged on functionality, artistic innovation and creativity. The group is also especially hoping for designs reflecting aspects of Ithaca’s unique culture, history, and characteristics of place.
This project is a partnership of the Downtown Ithaca Alliance, Tompkins County Tourism Program, the City of Ithaca Public Arts Commission, and the City of Ithaca Department of Public Works, with financial support provided by an anonymous donor.
